Although I had been contemplating this for a while, in the aftermath of the November, 2016, US election, I decided that I should actively engage with my congressional representative: Tom Reed (R) of the 23rd congressional district. He is the national representative of the place that I live–the southwest corner of New York state. It’s a place that is full of beautiful hills, trees, gorges, and rivers and also full of beautiful people who care about the place that they live and are also good neighbors to each other. It is also very divided. I decided that my letters to Congressional Representative Reed might be of general interest, especially to people in my district. But I also hope that this might serve as a model of political engagement that might prompt others to do something similar.
